Here you will find some little tidbits: places to visit in Rimini and the hinterland of Romagna, including medieval villages, mysterious castles, and ancient legends. All destinations are very easy to be reached from Bellaria: which one are you going to visit first?
Santarcangelo - just a 15 minutes’ drive from Bellaria Igea Marina - is a small municipality in the province of Rimini. It has Roman origins and is located on the Via Emilia. Piazza Ganganelli, hosting the town hall, is the town's main gathering point and is marked by the famous arch dedicated to Pope Clement XIV. The ancient part of Santarcangelo is located on Colle Giove, dominating the town.
If you want to have a panoramic view of the Marecchia Valley, the Rocca di San Leo is certainly one of the most striking views. Situated on an impervious rocky spur, it towers majestically over the valley and witnessed numerous historical figures such as St Francis, Dante, and the Count of Cagliostro. The latter - a famous alchemist and esotericist - was imprisoned in San Leo in 1791 and remained there until his death.
The Republic of San Marino - the third smallest state in Europe - extends south-west of Rimini on the slopes of Mount Titano. The three symbolic towers of the Republic (the Rocca Guaita, the Rocca Cesca and the Montale) are extremely interesting tourist sites and also make up for the city skyline.
Verucchio has very ancient origins, dating back to the 9th century BC. Archaeological excavations have demonstrated the presence of the Villanovan civilization. The town's Archaeological Museum is a must-see, boasting an exhibition of burial object found in the necropolis of Verucchio.
The medieval castle of Gradara, belonging to the Malatesta family, is famous for being mentioned by Dante in the 5th Canto of the Inferno. The fortress was the scene of the love affair between Paolo and Francesca. The two lovers were caught in flagrante by Gianciotto Malatesta, by the latter together they were tragically killed.
A solitary castle, dating back to pre-Roman times, associated with a mysterious legend. It is said that the ghost of Azzurrina dwells here: a little girl who died prematurely during the summer solstice of 1375. It is said that the voice of the girl can still be heard from the dungeon... Set out for Montebello and see for yourself.
